Still Mind: A Mind for a Good Life
Meditate
To develop a still mind, meditation is a must. Meditating is thought to be an act for monks or people who have a higher purpose. It is taken to be a tough exercise that has to be done in silence, sitting in a specific way and for hours. Do not worry. That is not the only way to meditate. Not everyone has the time and interest in meditating that way.
You can develop your own meditation technique. All kinds of meditation will help you develop a still mind. However, I recommend a meditation method that is easy to incorporate in your life. One that you can do while going about your everyday tasks. It can be in any form but ensure it is about keeping your mind free of useless thoughts. In short, choose your thoughts.
The right thoughts are those that relate to the tasks you are undertaking in a moment. While undertaking these tasks you will find future tasks that require your attention. Meaning, you must limit your thoughts about the future to tasks linked to what you are doing in the moment. Any other thought about the future is noise that you must avoid. Do not allow it to occupy your mind.
Thoughts about past moments can’t be entertained if you want to develop a still mind.
To choose your thoughts is not easy. You will find stubborn thoughts that you cannot take out of your mind. This is normal. You just need time. You just have to keep trying to get them out. Try using techniques like focusing on your breath, body feelings and items in your surroundings.
When focusing on your breath, aim to clear your mind of any other thoughts. Just let your mind focus on breathing in and out. It is not easy but do your best until when you do three focused breaths. Return to your tasks when you achieve this. Practice the breathing exercise regularly, such as every 30 minutes, until you strengthen your ability to direct your thoughts.
